Slovenly in Slovenia

26/06/2014

We stop in Ankaran, in Slovenia. One night or two? I decided we should not just drive through each country, but stop and see what the places are like.

Carol does not like this place – it is Camping Adria a resort site with everything. It has tennis courts, badminton, table tennis, a 50m swimming pool, restaurants, a spa, and a bowling arena.

The site does have plenty of shady areas and we have a nice placement near the toilet block and the sea.
Carol says did I take this photograph from my private helicopter?

However the beach is just a promenade with steps into the sea, and the sea is not clear water.

The view out to sea is of container ships and a port, nothing beautiful.

The camp office gives us each a bracelet with a chip inside to get into the shower block, and this also turns the water on in the shower. Stupid system, since the shower only works for 10- 30 seconds after the bracelet touches the sensor. Then it switches off, oh no!

So, yet another use for duct tape, since it sticks even in the wet. Just stick the braclet to the sensor, and hey presto, a five minute shower with water that gets hotter by the minute, since it does not stop and start all the time. Peel the duct tape and bracelet off, and stick it to your plastic washbag ready for the next time.

I understand completely where Carol is coming from. It is her German ancestry that resonates with everything well organised, German taps and ceramics, the  wet room that slopes gently into the drain so that there is an area which is dry to dry yourself off, and a bench to sit on to put your shoes back on (which have stayed dry), stainless steel hooks to hang everything on. A tap and a drain at every site so you need not move, to get fresh water and empty waste. Electricity that is always on, and not metred. Staff that are helpful, and know the answer to everything. Spick and span.

By contrast the Slovenian site has showers with no bench to sit on, a flat and therefore wet area to stand on, an absence of marble or nice ceramics in the shower and toilet facilities. Rubbish overflowing in the rubbish area. Noisy children, yapping dogs, fat and ugly women. (Ok, that is my gripe, not Carol’s)

I’d like to stay a few days, play some tennis, some badminton, swim in the pool, relax in the sun. But I think we shall be moving on, since Carol is not in love with Slovenia. Too slovenly for her.
