This is the panoramic
road in the Bavarian Alps called Rossfeld scenic road. Bikers come from all
over to ride it, as the experience and the views are amazing. At the summit you
have views of mountains at every side, all rising over 2000 metres.
As it costs
the administration of Obersalzburg quite a bit to keep the road clear,
especially in winter, it is a toll road. There is a nice map of the area.
Usually it costs €4
for a bike and €7 for a car with two adults, but there was a car rally on and
half of the road was closed. So we went to the summit for €2 and came back down
the same way. Lovely church on the way up.
With Carol prodding me
to stop at every opportunity for the view and the photo, we took it a a
leisurely pace. The road rises about 3000 feet from the Berchtesgaden valley to
the summit, where there is parking for several hundred cars. The summit is at
5100 feet, and you get there by a sequence of hairpin bends, good twisty road,
and over a dozen or so bridges.
The nearest mountain is Hoher Goll at 2522 metres and is very close.
When we stopped going
down for more pictures I took these of the bike, as I was quite pleased with
how it got us up some pretty steep sections of road. Carol took the chance of a lie down..
