In honour of all the readers who have stumbled upon my blog looking for the story of the con-artist who paid for his fuel with a gold ring, and other gems, I am going to tell you how to mount your toilet roll dispenser to save money.
The site we are staying at is a bit of a gem; it is 200m to the beach, and if you fancy a 3km round trip you can walk into town, there are tennis courts next door, and there is plenty of space to play badminton. After David arrived he set up his slack line and did some line walking between two trees, encouraging a little applause from other campers. So we have plenty of space, good shade, hot water in the showers, not many campers and only us and at times one other motorhome.
And only €18 a night, which is a low season rate and not what you expect to pay in high season.
So how do they keep the price so low. Um not sure, but it may have to do with low use of those common expenses, toilet rolls and paper towels in the ablutions.
The toilet roll dispenser - well it also has a full roll of paper inside, but a very clever feed mechanism that only allows one square of toilet tissue to be dispensed before the end breaks off (inside the roll holder of course, which is locked) So that means only one square dispensed per day.
But I am not complaining, far from it. I'm happy to take my own toilet paper to the ablution block, and use my own towel to dry my hands.
And....They have mounted the paper towel dispenser with the end cunningly concealed in the mechanism, and no way of feeding it out save by using the key the cleaner has in her possession only. She has thoughtfully provided the waste bin to put used towels in, but since none can be dispensed she saves herself the job of emptying the waste bin every day - it is always empty.
And even happier that the site not only continues to charge €18 day, but also throws in free wifi broadband, which every other site charges K20 (about £2) daily to access the internet.
I can imagine that the site manager gets approval for the 3 star status of the site with the tick board. Hot water in the ablution block (check), 4 showers (check) 4 toilets (check), dish washing area (check) water electricity and waste disposal points (check), toilet paper (check - always full) paper towels in hand basin area (check - always stocked)
