Flash floods, torrential rain in the Sydney area

We arrived in Newcastle to the accompaniment of rain on our train journey on Sunday, and we expected the rain to last a couple of days.

It has got heavier and heavier, and in the last 24 hours the Newcastle area has had 194 mm of rain - that is is 19 cm, and breaks the record set in 1895. Anthony and Claudette measured 145mm in 12 hours before their rain gauge overflowed. Their small creeks on either side of the property have turned into rivers.

Anthony is very keen on growing his own vegetables and salads and it was comical watching him come in with greens from the garden dripping wet in his raincoat, and with the salads floating in two inches of water that came down as he was harvesting.

Claudette is going to take Shirley to work in her four wheel drive this morning, which should be safer than her little car.

We were quite glad our only outing was to tour the Newcastle art gallery yesterday, and somehow we went out in the eye of the storm, in a tiny clearing in the enormous wet cloud storm, seen on the radar.

Our bedroom in Anthony and Claudette's house looks out onto the rainforest and the sound of the river thundering past in the night was impressive. Some houses in the region have been swept away but the magnificent house stands.

While in suburbs of Newcastle cars were underwater..

Inside Anthony and I played table tennis, trying to perfect our forehand topspin drives, and enjoyed cooking in the kitchen!
