Alpine Germany - Berchtesgaden

Europe blog June 7th

Today I discover how we come to be staying back near Trier when I had the sense that we travelled back west instead of going East. I had been using the 2013 map of sites and a 2014 book, so that the sites were not in the places I thought they should be.... D'uh..!

Fortunately today when I entered the GPS co-ordinates of a site I thought was near to Munich, and the satnav instructed us to turn around and go back, I realized this would just not do. While in a carpark I got out another book of campsites and found a place in Augsberg, just before Munich.

It is quite pretty and there is a lake. We take a walk around and do some people watching mostly, and only stay one night.

June 8th

We made slow progress today thanks to accidents on the main highway and roadworks, but the scenery is pretty impressive as we turn towards Salzburg and away from Munich.

so we decided to stop in southern Germany at Berchtesgaden, which is very near the Eagles Nest, the highest road in Germany. (It used to be Hitler's mountain retreat and his holiday home was bombed by the Brits) This is pretty much our view, and the same as on the milk carton!

We took a wrong turn as the two satnav ladies bickered about how to get there, Mrs Stephen Hawking wanted us to go down a single lane mountain road of dubious quality, and Garmin lady took us to the top of eagle’s nest panorama, a 24’ incline that we just about managed in first gear. We will try it again by motorcycle tomorrow to go up the elevator for the magic view.

Today I was keen just to get to a site, and set up home, since it was hot and the journey had been tiring with all the contraflows.

We were in time to watch the final set of the Jokovitch Nadal final at Roland Garros, and it was a nail biting finish with both players refusing to concede anything.

Getting into my parking spot I reversed into an earth embackment, cracking the bumper in the same place as before. 4 tons of vehicle and an immovable bank of earth quite easily results in a bit of plastic cracking I have discovered. Fortunately I was able to make some repairs and it is hardly noticeable. Yup exactly the same place I cracked before....

We shall stay here for a few days since there is a lot to see on the German side, as well as Salzberg just across the border into Austria.

9th June
It is a holiday in Germany and there is a festival in town, so we go to do some lederhosen spotting, yup it's the real leather deal.

and then watch the salt-miners guild parade through town in ancient costume.

this guy is carrying the saltminer's mascot, although ti does look a bit wierd...

10th June

We take the bike to do some shopping; a shallow trolley fills 3 shopping bags and the panniers and tail bag swallow all this ok, so the trip back is easy. And the bike pulls easily up hills, which is great since the camp site is up quite a steep gradient.

In the afternoon we go off to see a waterfall and the river that cuts through a steep gorge, at a place called Almbachklamm.

It is a two hour walk up to the top to see the main waterfall, and there are several smaller waterfalls on the walk.

We stop halfway up and change into swimming costumes to have a swim. The water from the mountain is cold, and as clear as anything. It tastes lovely too.

Ok so this is the main waterfall at the top, a good two hour's walk.
