how to get a Go-box to travel through Austria in a >3.5 ton van

Well we finally got our box..

Having found the list of suppliers from the internet; no easy feat since the Go-box admin site is all in German, I hit it lucky with the pdf of suppliers and found a garage in the nearest town in Austria to us, before Salzburg.

The garage simply had an automatic machine which dispenses the go box complete with your contract. It took me a couple of attempts after filling in the on-screen forms with personal details and vehicle details, since the machine would not accept my debit card. Fortunately I had €100 in notes and fed these in, and after printing several pages of contract info to check, and instructions on fitting and interpreting the various bleeps and tones and light flashes which all signify something, the machine delivered my go-box. I almost danced with joy….!

After that we went to the lovely motorcycle shop in Hallein, also sort of on the route to Salzburg, where I had my Guzzi fixed when it sprung an oil leak. First we tried on some summer open helmets...

We spent a good hour or so in the motorcycle clothing department upstairs from the bikes, and chose some rain-suits, and then a proper female motorcycle jacket for Carol, in a breathable and waterproof material with armour on the shoulders and elbows, and some new summer gloves for me, with Kevlar armour on the knuckles. We also got some lightweight open face helmets which are nicer in the heat of summer, and managed to negotiate a 10% discount on the list prices.

Loading up was a little bit of a challenge, but with one small helmet in the tailbag and one fastened on top, we were fine for the journey home across the hills back into Germany. The bike panniers just swallow the stuff up.

In the evening we took in the public music in the town square over a couple of beers which finished the day off well. It was good old German squeeze box and oompah-pah.
