Arrived at Plitvic national park

We left Sibinj, the site just outside Senj this morning; we could see the rain coming in sheets from the sea and either side of Krk island. A wall of white approaching across a choppy sea. Watching the sea is a pleasant and claming thing to do; a little like watching fire, never still, and always changing in mood, yet resilient to the efforts we make to control it.

The drive to the national park is only 80-90km but the roads are hairpin bends up and through the mountains and the landscape changes, suddenly dropping away to green fields planted with maize and vegetables, grazing sheep, and everywhere honey and cheese for sale by the road.

We took the drive slowly, managing about 50km/hr and stopping at a convenient Lidl to do a little shopping. We then had lunch in the van, tucking into what we thought were cheesey bread rolls but turned out to be hot cheese and ham tarts, delicious. It rained most of the day, stopping as we drew nearer to Plitvicka.

The site is large and sloping and I immediately got stuck, wheels spinning hopelessly in the mud. Fortunately a rubber mat under each front wheel got us moving and I went downhill, and tried a different spot to park. It was very tricky, with levelling ramps getting trapped in the mud, until I found a bit of gravel on which the ramps could sit.

We made a cup of tea, and are sitting outside under rather grey skies. From being super sunny and warm at the coast, about 28-30', it feels like winter up here and we are wearing coats!

The weather is predicted to dry up tomorrow, so we shall explore then. The area is a UNESCO site and there are lakes and cascades of waterfalls to see.
