Sydney New Year's Eve celebrations

Carol and I went with Brenda and Bill Clasquin and three of their family to the centre of Sydney to watch the fireworks.

We divided up into two groups, since the men needed to reserve our patch of grass early and put up some chairs, while Brenda took the two of us on a walking tour of the city.

We started with the bridge walk, on the pedestrian part of the bridge, which had great views of the opera house and all the crowds who were gathering on the banks of the water.

Huge numbers of people had gathered early to reserve places by the water, and it was a carnival atmosphere everywhere.

There is a great view of Sydney opera house from the bridge.

We walked around the Rocks, the oldest part of Sydney, stopping for a beer and some German sausage and chips!

St Mary's cathedral in the city is very like Notre Dame in Paris, with a large round glass window.

We had walked over 11 km by the time we reached the queue to get in to Barangaroo Park, where we had tickets to watch the fireworks. The atmosphere was lovely, and the crowds of people incredibly well behaved with no drunkenness at all that we saw. They were serving hot pulled pork burgers and chips and wine or beers, but restricted in quantity to each ticket holder, which seemed very sensible.

By the time night fell, there were processions of boats on the river, all lit up, although my attempts to get a decent photo of this was hampered by not having a tripod to steady the camera.

Finally midnight came, with an enormous and spectacular display of fireworks from barges in the river and from the bridge itself.

Happy New Year everyone!
