Touring Australia - Sydney

We flew into Sydney from London via Dubai with Quantas.

Quantas is a great airline, and we were well looked after with nice food, snacks, and comfortable seats. A great range of films to watch and music or radio to listen to. As we chose our flights and a 10 hour stop in Dubai we qualified for a free overnight hotel stop-over and a free breakfast, so it was nice to spend a few hours in bed and have a shower.

Arriving in Sydney we were expecting to be searched somehow - I have watched too many documentaries on the Asian foods and drug smugglers. Anyway our luggage was checked through from London and arrived on the belt and we went through in very quick efficient style thanks to e-passport scanning machines. On our way out to look for a train station we stopped at a desk that did shuttle buses and discovered there is no difference in price between a train ticket and a short cab journey from the closest station, and a shared mini bus direct to your door. So we took the shuttle bus from the airport direct to the apartment in Darling harbour. REDYBUS is great! $44 for the two of us which is about £22 - a 30-40 minute journey.

The Darling harbour area has plenty of hotels to choose from if you aren't willing to give airbnbn a go. Mind you, I think airbnb and having a local host knocks spots off most hotels. It is great having a comfortable bedroom and your own bathroom, use of kitchen and lounge, wifi, and your own key to get in and out, and choosing exactly where you want to stay - I think hotels are going to be in for a big shock when airbnb takes all their business.

Here I am hanging out with Crocodile Dundee outside the small waterside zoo and waxworks.

There are warships and tall ships outside the maritime museum.

This is the Pyrmont bridge.

We had a good stroll around - the harbour has a long pedestrian bridge and an enormous range of restaurants on the waterside.

Even though it was cloudy and cool, the harbourside is a feel-good sort of place

The tall ship outside the maritime museum, and everywhere beautifully detailed.
