our Maison de Village en coeur de Céret

The big news is that after looking at several intersting properties in Céret we have made an offer on a village house, which has been accepted. We are going to sign the initial contracts next Tuesday (compromis de vente) which starts the process going.

The property is right next to the market square in the town, and a few hundred yards from other squares where there are restaurants, and opposite a boulangerie.

The ground floor will house my art gallery and Carol's patchwork, in two areas which open onto a small road, at the front and for Carol's work, a pedestrian alley at the rear.

Above this there are two bedrooms, a lounge, a kitchen dining area, and two shower rooms, and finally a roof terrace with views of the mountains.

It is small and perfectly formed, and an ideal lock up and leave house for when we spend time in Reading, since we decided not to sell or rent out our house there.

There are no pictures as yet, and anyway the house does not look much at all from the road when the garage doors are closed it is quite unremarkable. The interior photographs are simply someone else's furniture, in a very small space, so these too are misleading.

In size, it is very similar to the flat we had in London at Rutley Close. However Rutley Close had more outside space, and the outlook very different.

Our neighbours will be very close to us - the road outside is only just large enough for one car to drive along, and does not get used for car traffic except by the local residents, and these are very few.

Mostly the old town centre is pedestrianised, although we have noticed a few business owners with motorcycles parked outside. I met the photographer and person responsible for marketing one of the local artists, and he has his shop just a few streets away. You can walk all around Ceret in half an hour quite easily. There are two main museums, one for modern art, which is going to be enlarged this year to show Picasso's work.
