Benidorm, "sweet greens and blues are the colours I choose" (J Taylor)

24th – 25th November 2013

We drive northeast back along the coast towards Alicante and stop near Benidorm.

I always thought Benidorm a resort town, with Irish pubs and fish and chips, and a tacky coastal area with large hotels. However as you approach, the landscape turns pleasantly green. This makes a real change from the grey and dusky countryside further south.

Then the roads lead you onto the Benidorm bypass circuit, and you get a look at the city. It is full of high rise buildings, and modern too. And it is a huge city. I wasn’t expecting that.

Fortunately we are staying at a site in a village or town just north of Benidorm, at L’Alfas del Pi. We were going to the site listed in our book, but instead stop at a site we get to about 1km earlier, at Orange Grove campsite. We are met by a jolly Welsh couple; he instantly reminds me of Rob Brydon, but without the sharp haircut. His name is Dai, short for David apparently.

He shows us to a pitch, and tells us there is a bread van that calls in the morning at about 0830, and that we can have that pitch until 15th when it is booked for the winter. Several people stay here for the duration of winter, and it is certainly cheaper and more pleasant than being in England.
