The rainclouds have stayed put over the mountains beyond the lake; we can see the tops of Mt Burke at 1400m and Dingle Peak at 1800m but the mountains over that height, Mt Aspiring at 3000m and Mt Alta at 2300m are lost in cloud.
Our tiny little hire car on the road beside Lake Hawea
Sheep grazing beside the road to Wanaka
This means our planned flight over the great ridge of mountains to Milford Sound is off until Wednesday, when the rainclouds will have moved away. We shall probably do some walks around the lake tomorrow instead, and may stay a day longer here.
We went into Wanaka to have a picnic lunch beside the lake and watch the other tourists; Wanaka is very busy and popular through the summer, and gets busy in the ski season too. It is a very nice town, and buzzing with cafés and restaurants, and plenty of shops.
There is a neat sculpture beside the lake - the nurturing hand.
There is a great outdoor and indoor attraction called “Puzzling World” at Wanaka, and we went there to pass a few hours just in case it started to rain. They suggested we did the maze first, but it takes at least an hour, and most people take double this time.
When you find the bridges, you get an elevated view and this helps a little. We lasted about an hour or so and then took an emergency exit!
The toilet block has this amusing wall painting.
Inside the halls of illusions get even more weird.
Yes, that is me and Carol in the same room!
The water in this tap fountain appears to come from nowhere. And the bench has no legs.
The maze is very difficult, and I got very disorientated doing the classic chase of four corner towers in any order. The difficult challenge of getting them in a set order was quite beyond me. It is meant to take around 1-2 hours, and we gave up after 3 towers and an hour of walking and headed for an emergency exit to escape.
I think we spent a happy few hours there before doing some grocery shopping and returning to Lake Hawea for a BBQ with our hosts, Jo and Scotty.
